Terri Janke and Company

Terri Janke commenced practice in 1995 and established her own law firm, Terri Janke and Company in 2000. Terri was born in north Queensland and has family connections to Cairns, the Torres Strait Islands (Meriam Mir) and Cape York Peninsula (Wuthathi).
Terri has had extensive experience as a lawyer specialising in Indigenous intellectual property, cultural heritage, media and business law. She has worked in both the community and commercial law sector. Terri is a natural mediator, accredited by the LEADR Association of Dispute Resolvers. She is a prominent and energetic public speaker who brings a unique perspective to the resolution of legal issues and negotiations. Terri has spoken to diverse and enthusiastic audiences and in 2009 delivered addresses at the Garma Festival in Arnhem Land, the IED Forum in Alice Springs, and presented the keynote address for the Toyota Public Lecture Series at the Australian National University.
Terri is widely regarded as a leader in her field and is highly distinguished. Terri was awarded the Highly Commended, Aboriginal Justice Award from the Law and Justice Foundation of NSW in 2007. In 2005 Terri was listed on the NSW Women's Honour Roll and in 2001 Terri was named Evolving Business Winner in the NSW Aboriginal Employment and Business Awards. In 1995 Terri received the John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship. Terri Janke os NAIDOC Person of the Year 2011. NAIDOC is an annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians in various fields.

 

Professor Gerry Bodeker

Professor Gerry Bodeker works internationally in the health and conservation policy on medicinal plants and their use in healthcare. An Australian whose doctoral studies were at Harvard, he is a senior faculty member in public health in the University of Oxford Medical School and Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University, New York.  He is Chair of the Global Initiative For Traditional Systems (GIFTS) of Health, Oxford, UK (www.giftsofhealth.org). He began his professional work in the Kimberley region of Western Australia in the mid-1970’s, working in community development programs with indigenous communities.
Professor Bodeker has written extensively on traditional & complementary medicine. He is Editor-in-Chief of the World Health Organization Global Atlas of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (2005). He and his team have pioneered work into the public health and policy aspects of traditional medicine use in developing countries. With colleagues at Oxford he co-edited the UN Food & Agriculture’s book: Medicinal Plants for Forest Conservation & Healthcare (2003). He is International Editor of the Journal of Tropical Medicinal Plants and has done consulting with several UN agencies, National Geographic Magazine and government organizations in Africa and Asia. In the field of wellness, he co-edited the book “Understanding the Global Spa Industry (2008).

In South-East Asia, he has worked for two decades with Vietnamese scientists on building research capacity on Vietnamese medicinal plants. In Thailand, Gerry Bodeker has worked on plant-based anti-malarials and at the Thai-Burma border with refugees from Burma. In Malaysia, he has assisted the Govt of Malaysia in developing research capacity on traditional medicine and in establishing an international database on traditional and complementary medicine. Drawing on a decade of work in Malaysia, Gerry Bodeker co-authored a book in 2009 on Malaysian health traditions. He is currently working with colleagues in Bali on the conservation of ancient medical manuscripts and with the Govt of Qatar on wellness traditions of their region.


Peter Cochrane
Director of National Parks

Peter has been Director of National Parks since October 1999. His priorities include: strong and effective relationships with traditional owners of jointly managed parks and other stakeholders; enhancing agency performance, credibility and reputation in delivering its mission; and positioning parks as critical contributors to, and partners in, regional economies. Peter helped develop and champion the National Landscape initiative with Tourism Australia as a practical and leading approach to redefining parks and tourism issues as opportunities for collaboration and mutual benefit.

Peter has worked for the oil and gas industry on national environment and competition policy issues and as an adviser to two federal Ministers on environment and natural resources issues.

Peter has a Masters degree in Public Policy and a Bachelor of Science degree. He has a background in field ecology and the eco-physiology of native plants.

Shane Edwards
General Manager, Mecure Cairns Harbourside

Shane Edwards is the General Manager of the Mercure Cairns Harbourside and Indigenous Champion for Accor Hotels in Queensland. While his role includes operation of the Mercure he provides a link between Accor and the people of Cape York and the Torres Strait in one of Australia’s largest Tourism hotspots.

Originally born in New Zealand from the Ngati Porou tribe on the East Coast, Shane has settled into his adopted country of Australia where he now resides having worked in Sydney, Melbourne, Kings Canyon, Sunshine Coast, Broome, Adelaide and more recently Cairns.

Accor believes the position and influence of the tourism sector gives it an unsurpassed opportunity to take a leadership role in developing and nurturing life and work opportunities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

Anita Mendiratta

Anita Mendiratta is a global management consultant specialising in strategy, implementation and communications in the sectors of Tourism & Economic Development. Canadian by birth and now based in Cape Town, South Africa, Anita’s work spreads across all regions of the world through a rich client portfolio of governments and private travel and tourism entities. He is a renowned expert on digital marketing, especially in the area of socially led online marketing. Recognized for his published articles, his frequent speaking engagements, as well as his prestigious consulting and teaching programs. Mark Olive

Mark Olive, aka 'The Black Olive', has been a chef for over 25 years and has become a well know Australian celebrity with his charismatic style and creative approach to food, starring in his own television series 'The Outback Cafe' and a host of cooking, lifestyle and travel shows nationally and globally.
Mark's passion for fusing native food and culture with contemporary lifestyle cooking has led to a huge international profile, and the creation of Black Olive Catering, an indigenous catering company in North Melbourne, Victoria. As a Bundjalung man, Mark's family originated from the Northern Rivers region in NSW. Born in Wollongong he became interested in cooking as a child, watching his mother and aunts prepare meals. He trained under a European chef and has worked in a number of kitchens ranging from theatres, universities, health services, film sets and in a lá carte restaurants around the globe, before establishing his own business in 2008.
Along with his daily business operations, Mark now cooks regularly for clients such as Tourism Australia (TA) at large corporate, public and cultural events around the country and the world, bringing his signature infusions of contemporary outback flavours to every occasion.
In 2010 Mark's business was chosen as one of the destinations on Oprah's Victorian itinerary when she travelled to Australia with her Ultimate Audience. Her lucky guests were treated to a cultural experience of indigenous food, art and storytelling during Mark's infamous cooking demonstration. Most recently Mark hosted his own private Masterclass on series three of MasterChef, and has made regular appearances in the kitchen on The Circle (both airing on Network Ten). Mark will also be published in SBS's new foodie Feast Magazine which launches later in 2011. Due to his success, Mark has been selected to be a member of TA's 'Friends of Australia' program, which was "created to harness the power of bright and influential individuals who are making a name for themselves on the world stage, and who have a genuine affinity with Australia".


Anna Pollock

Anna Pollock has over 35 years’ experience as a consultant, strategist, speaker, and change agent. Described as an irrepressibly curious “renaissance woman”, her strength derives from an ability to dig beneath surface trends to find and make sense of the real drivers of change combined with a creative capacity to develop innovative responses.
She enjoys dual Canadian and British citizenship having worked in each country for over 15 years and is now a much sought after speaker internationally, focusing on the deep changes affecting tourism and community development.
While resident in Canada she undertook seminal work in human resource development, sustainable tourism, health tourism and adventure travel and received The Visionary of the Year Award from the tourism industry in western Canada in recognition of her contribution to thought leadership.

In the late 1990s, she conceived and developed the first destination IT strategy based on the Internet and later acted as CEO of a UK-based software company that developed a Destination Management System and became recognised by the UK government as “best of breed”. Three years ago, in anticipation of the need by the tourism industry to reduce its carbon footprint, Anna created The Icarus Foundation a not-for-profit agency formed to assist the Canadian tourism industry constructively address climate change and she has quickly become recognised as an innovative and creative thought leader, assisting destinations and companies face up to the challenges of growth and resource dependency.
Saddened by the hesitancy with which mainstream tourism approached the need to reduce its environmental impact and heartened by research that shows customers might be changing faster than suppliers, Anna is developing the concept of Conscious.Travel as a movement that integrates and enhances integrates the creative thinking emerging from a diverse range of interests within tourism including ecotourism, responsible tourism, adventure travel, tourism philanthropy, slow tourism, tourism 2.0, green travel, ethical tourism, community-based tourism, and indigenous tourism. Conscious.Travel is a movement and an e-learning leadership program designed to develop fully conscious change agents within the tourism community.

Ben Sherman
Native Tourism Alliance

Ben Sherman is a member of the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) Nation, born and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Ben has been a national leader in the development of American Indian tourism efforts in the United States. He has organized and presided over numerous American Indian tourism development conferences, workshops and trade shows. Ben conducts frequent international presentations where he discusses indigenous values, wisdom and knowledge.

Ben is a co-founder of the American Indian/Alaska Native Tourism Association and the Native Tourism Alliance. Ben is the president of Medicine Root, Inc., a private Colorado corporation specializing in Indian business development, tourism and arts projects. The company organized and conducted Indian Country Tours in various regions of the United States.

He is a former board member of the Western American Indian Chamber, Business Enterprises for Sustainable Travel, First Peoples Fund and Colorado Scholarship Coalition.

Darrell Wade
CEO, PEAK Adventures and Co-founder, Intrepid Travel

In February 2011, Darrell Wade became CEO of PEAK Adventures, an independently managed company specialising in the fast growing adventure travel market.

PEAK Adventures is a strategic venture between Intrepid Travel (the company Darrell co-founded in 1989) and the world's largest leisure travel group, TUI Travel PLC.  It consists of over 20 businesses with combined revenue of circa over AUD $400 million.  Together, they take 340,000 passengers to all seven continents.

Brands included in the venture are Adventure Center, The Adventure Company, Adventure Tours Australia, Country Walkers, Exodus, Gecko's, Guerba, Headwater, Imaginative Traveller, Intrepid Suntrek, Intrepid Travel, Oz Experience, Peregrine, Pinnacle Tours, Sawadee, TrekAmerica and WesternXposure.

Darrell has over 22 years experience in adventure travel, having co-founded Intrepid Travel with best mate, Geoff Manchester in 1989. They came up with the idea for Intrepid Travel on an epic journey across Africa in 1988, with a group of friends. They felt they could offer travellers a new way to travel – small group adventures that would have all the benefits of independent travel with none of the hassles.

Intrepid Travel commenced operations in South-East Asia and subsequently expanded to include Europe, the Middle East, Australasia, the Pacific, Latin America and the rest of Asia.

Darrell brings the Intrepid philosophy to PEAK Adventures - to provide fun and affordable travel adventures that are sustainable and beneficial to both travellers and local communities.  Whilst at Intrepid Travel Darrell established Intrepid's philanthropic initiative, The Intrepid Foundation, which currently supports over 40 projects for conservation and communities around the globe.  He also spearheaded Intrepid's climate management program, with the company realising its goal of becoming carbon neutral in 2010.

Jingjing Yang

Jingjing Yang has published books, journal papers and book chapters including the first academic book about ski tourism in Chinese language, and provided presentations at a number of international academic conferences. Based on one year ethnographic research from summer 2009 to autumn 2010 in the Kanas’s Tuva and Kazakh peoples’ settlements in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, Jingjing Yang uses social conflict theory to discuss tourism impacts on indigenous communities and proposes a tension-directed tourism destination development system model in her PhD study. Her research and teaching interests include indigenous tourism, social conflict, cross-cultural issues and qualitative research methods.

She has 3 years first-hand working experience in China CYTS Tours Holding Co., Ltd. (CYTS), a leading tourism company and China National Tourism Administration, and undertook PhD study under the supervision of Professor Chris Ryan at University of Waikato, New Zealand.
